dan-painting

Welcome to my site which combines two great passions of mine: military history and a love of finely detailed painting.

The majority of the paintings you can see in this site are based on actual people, some of whom I have images or photographs for, others just the barest of details of their regiment, but about whom something is known. This can add greater poignancy to the painting, especially with those paintings representing people of the more recent past, especially in the light of the recent commemorations of the centenary of the First World War, which has brought a renewed interest in learning of the history of our ancestors.

It is an interest that  has in its turn led me to research people in my family’s past – both from the UK and France and Belgium. It is a fascinating journey!

Originally contained under the guise of Novus Art Studio, I have decided to set up a separate site – DG Military Art –  dedicated to the military illustrations, to be able to highlight these stories by having a page outlining each individuals story where possible. Bear with me , this is quite an undertaking and is still in progress. I am also, through the new site,  being able to offer prints for sale through our online shop.

The original paintings are in watercolour and gouache on Hahnemuehle watercolour paper. I  tend to show the soldiers at rest and each painting involves a great deal of  meticulous research both in the details of uniform and equipment and the backgrounds, where I try to  place the figure in a scenario pertinent to their military service or role.

The paintings shown are just a sample of those periods which  I have covered, so if there is not a period shown that you are interested in, by all means feel free to get in touch with any suggestions. I am also happy to discuss any commissions via the contact form here.

I live in France but maintain a studio in the UK, where I am based in Wateringbury, near Maidstone in Kent, and am able to receive visitors by prior appointment only, if you live nearby and wish to talk over a project.

I can be contacted at  Novus Studio, 339 Redhill, Wateringbury, Maidstone, Kent, ME18 5LB or on +44(0) 7702 568900 or email dan@novusart.co.uk
